How to do a clean installation of Windows 10

In Windows 10, a new installation is the best option for removing everything from the hard drive and starting from scratch when your device is experiencing performance or other problems. By using this process, you can quickly troubleshoot startup and shutdown issues, as well as memory usage and applications. In addition, you can quickly get rid of viruses and other types of malicious programs, repair system corruption and improve battery life.

If you are upgrading from a previous version, a new installation is also a good method to install the new version. Although there are several ways to upgrade, they usually do not work properly and can cause unwanted settings, files, and applications in the new installation. It is also a useful choice to start over with a copy of Windows 10 on a new hard drive that you just replaced or to configure a new pre-installed device with a lot of bloatware.

How to prepare a device before installation

Step1: Backing up your device and data

The installation process removes all content from the main hard disk of your computer. It is therefore wise to create a backup of your files before proceeding.

To do this, be sure to upload your files to OneDrive or the cloud storage service you prefer. Or you can simply copy the files you want to restore to the new installation on an external storage.

Step2: Downloading device drivers

Although the setup process detects and installs the necessary drivers, you also want to download the latest drivers for the devices, such as your graphics card, network card, and Ethernet adapter, in case they are not detected.

In addition, here is a list of the most common computer manufacturers' support websites for downloading the latest drivers:

Step 3: Checking Windows 10 activation

If you are trying to install a feature update or restart at scratch with a new installation on a device that is already running Windows 10, you do not need to reenter a product key during installation. Windows 10 will automatically wake up using an Internet connection after installation.

Windows 10 minimum hardware requirements:

  • Processor: 1GHz or SoC (System on a Chip).
  • Memory: 1GB for 32-bit or 2GB for 64-bit.
  • Storage: 16GB for 32-bit or 20GB for 64-bit.
  • Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.
  • Display: 800x600.
