Run-time Sophos Error 1606 when Sophos Antivirus fails or hangs during execution, hence its name. This does not necessarily mean that the code was corrupted, just that it did not work while it was running. This type of error will appear as an annoying notification on your screen unless it is processed and corrected. Here are the symptoms, causes and ways to solve the problem.

  • “Error 1606” is displayed and closes the active program window.
  • Your PC frequently crashes with error 1606 while running the same program.
  • “Sophos Error 1606” is displayed.
  • Windows is slow and reacts slowly to the mouse or keyboard.
  • Your computer “hangs” periodically for a few seconds at a time.

Causes of error 1606

  • The corrupt download or incomplete installation of the Sophos Antivirus software.
  • Windows registry corruption following a recent Sophos Antivirus-related software change (install or uninstall).
  • Virus or malware that has corrupted Windows system files or program files associated with Sophos Antivirus.
  • Another program has deleted files related to Sophos Antivirus either maliciously or by mistake.

Runtime errors such as “Error 1606” can be caused by various factors. It is therefore important to solve the problem in order to prevent all possible causes.

Solutions to Sophos Error 1606

Method 1 – Close the conflicting programs

  1. When you receive a run-time error, keep in mind that this happens because of conflicting programs with each other. The first thing to do to solve the problem is to stop these conflicting programs.
  2. Open the Task Manager by simultaneously clicking Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This will allow you to see the list of running programs.
  3. Go to the Processes tab and stop the programs one by one by highlighting each program and clicking the End Process button.
  4. You will need to check if the error message reappears each time you stop a process.
  5. Once you have identified the program causing the error, you can proceed to the next troubleshooting step, which is reinstalling the application.

Method 2 – Update / Reinstall Conflicting Programs

Using the control panel

  1. For Windows 7, click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then click Uninstall a program.
  2. For Windows 8, click the Start button, then scroll down, click More Settings, and then click Control Panel> Uninstall a program.
  3. For Windows 10, simply type Control Panel in the search box, click the result, and then click Uninstall a program.
  4. Once in Programs and Features, click the problem program, and then click Update or Uninstall.
  5. If you choose to update, you will simply need to follow the prompt to complete the process. However, if you choose to uninstall, you will need to follow the prompt to uninstall and then re-download or use the application installation disc to reinstall the program.

 Use other methods

  1. For Windows 7, you can find a list of all installed programs when you click Start and scroll your mouse over the list that appears on the tab. You can see on this list utility to uninstall the program. You can continue and uninstall using the utilities available in this tab.
  2. For Windows 10, you can click Start, Settings, and then Applications.
  3. Scroll down to see the list of applications and features installed on your computer.
  4. Click on the program that caused the run-time error, and then you can choose to uninstall or click Advanced Options to reset the application.

Method 3 – Update your virus protection program or download and install the latest Windows update.

Virus infection that causes a runtime error on your computer must be prevented immediately, quarantined, or removed. Make sure you update your antivirus program and run a thorough scan of the computer or run Windows Update to get the latest virus definition and solution.

Method 4 – Reinstall the runtime libraries

The error may come from an update, such as the MS Visual C ++ package, that may not be installed correctly or completely. What you can do then is to uninstall the current package and install a new copy.

  1. Uninstall the package by going to Programs and Features, and find and highlight the Microsoft Visual C ++ redistributable package.
  2. Click Uninstall at the top of the list and, when done, restart your computer.
  3. Download the latest Microsoft redistributable package and install it.

Method 5 – Perform Disk Cleanup

  1. You may also encounter a runtime error because of very little free space on your computer.
  2. You should consider backing up your files and freeing up space on your hard drive.
  3. You can also empty your cache and restart your computer.
  4. You can also run Disk Cleanup, open your browser window and right-click on your main directory (this is usually C :).
  5. Click Properties, and then click Disk Cleanup.

If these quick fixes do not work, you can still back up the files and run the repair reinstallation on your computer.
